Edinburgh 2012, Scotland's Capital City

History

Edinburgh's name is thought to originate from 'Fort of Eidyn', when it was just a hill fort. It is divided into four areas - Old Town, New Town, South Side and Leith. Old Town is based on mediaeval roads and crowded. New Town came along in the 18th Century to help relieve it. Leith is the Port area and retains its own identity..

Attractions

Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline. Follow the Royal Mile down from the Castle and you will pass the national whisky museum. If you survive that, then further down is Holyrood House, the Queen's official Scotland Residence.

Edinburgh festival and the Fringe Festival (the world's largets Arts festival) are held in early August. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo should not be missed.

Edinburgh has its own Zoo. It is the second most visited attraction in Scotland (after the Castle) and is the only zoo in the UK where you can see Polar bears and koalas.

Well worth purchasing is the Edinburgh Pass which gives you entry to over 30 attractions, bus travel, retail and resturant offers and a 90 page guidebook.
